Combating Driver Distractions

February 13, 2013

Automotive Technology Supplier Continental is in the works of trying to reduce human error while driving, which is the cause of over 1,100 accidents a year, the number is said to probably be much, much higher since most people probably aren’t going to admit to the police the were distracted by their cell phone or the cars radio. Continental said they plan to do something about it. So they developed a concept vehicle and added some new systems for it. The concept uses an infrared camera to what the drivers face and it studies their movements and watches their eyes to see what their looking at or whats distracting them. They say about 80% of accidents are related on driver mistakes so tackling this issue could save thousands of lives and thousands of accidents and injuries. Once the systems detects a driver distracted it uses its Halo Guidance system to intervene, what that does is use a light path to guide the drivers eyes back to where they should be. While this concept is still being developed it will probably become more of a reality when the industry actually adopts it, So its probably a long ways off but developments and improvements in this technology may one day save many, many lives and help reduce accidents.
